Euler’s formula. Its general form [exp(i * x) = cos(x) + i * sin(x)] establishes the amazing connection between trigonometric and exponential functions. Its most elegant form [exp(i * pi) + 1 = 0] is widely considered the most beautiful mathematical equation in history. It contains all three “man-made” transcendental numbers in one term, the multiplicative identity [1], and the additive identity [0]. It is quite hard to look at this equation and think of mathematics as a man-made construct that from which this luckily fell. Its beauty suggests a deeper, more natural basis for mathematics and - by extension - all of science.
